Egyptian Walking Onion

All Parts of this Remarkable Onion are Edible! Chop the stalks for scallions and the bulb and bulbils for onions! Days to maturity vary. All parts of this remarkable plant are edible, and it's such a unique and fun plant to see in the mundane vegetable patch! The long, thick green stalks are terrific scallions, and the little cluster of brownish bulbils at the top of the plant are miniature onions -- tender, savory, and mild. The larger underground bulb may also be used as an onion or replanted for next year's crop.Walking Onion, or "Tree Onion," is a perennial hardy across the U.S. (zones 3-10) that not only grows a big underground bulb like other onions, but also a thick, strong stalk, at the top of which arise little brown bulbils. As summer turns to fall, the green stalks bend over beneath the weight of the bulbils, which then hit the ground -- often 5 feet or more away from the original plant -- and seed themselves! Voila -- new Walking Onion plants!Choose a site for your Egyptian Walking Onion that you won't need to plough under or use for another crop (unless you want to plant flowering annuals or quick vegetable crops among your Walking Onions, which would be lovely), and let at least half of your plants "walk" the first year. The site will be colonized quickly with thriving plants that sport chartreuse to cream blooms from late spring till early fall, and you'll have all the scallions, mini onions, and big delectable "in-ground" onions you could ever want.
