Elderberries are very ornamental, with beautiful foliage and large, delicate clusters of tiny white flowers in early summer. The purple-black berries are not edible raw, but are good for making preserves, flavoring wine and pastries. Berries ripen in late summer and are high in vitamin C and anthocyanins. Shrubs are often good additions to the full sun border, easy to grow and shape into a full canopy. This collection includes two varieties, Adams and York, needed for cross-pollination and good fruit set. Caution: Only the blue or purple berries of elderberry are edible. The active toxic alkaloids in elderberry plants are hydrocyanic acid and sambucine.
