Garlic - Silverskin - Nootka Rose - Org

Nootka Rose Organic Garlic (Softneck) is a Northwest heirloom garlic from the San Juan Islands in Washington state. It has a medium to large bulb with wrappers that are thick, shiny, and off-white. There are 15 - 20 cloves per bulb which are streaked red on mahogany. Its flavor is strong and has an excellent storability. If planted in too rich of soil, the cloves can lose their rosy hue. Nootka Rose is very attractive for braiding. Garlic survives bitterly cold winters underground and then grows rapidly when the weather warms in spring; bulbs in summer. Garlic needs fertile soil with lots of organic matter. The soil needs to remain uncompacted through the long growing season. “Lift the bulbs” is usually used to describe moving things like daffodils, but it’s also a good way to think about getting garlic out of the ground. Those heads are more delicate than they seem and any cut or bruise will shorten storage life. Best to store them in a dark, dry well ventilated area.
