Kabuli Black Organic (Garbanzos) is a dry bean originally from Kabul, Afghanistan and released by Washington State University. It is hardy and vigorous, completely black; the seed coat is charcoal black rather than the typical blonde color of garbanzo beans; two beans per pod. It has white flowers with blue, violet or pink veins. These frost-tolerant beans have no problem reaching maturity in the Kittitas Valley in Washington State. Make your own falafel and hummus! Black Kabuli makes a great addition to a salad, and is a colorful ingredient in soup. Try it as a "refried" in your favorite Mexican recipe. Kabuli Black is also known as Chickpeas. The chickpea is a cool-season annual that requires about 100 days to reach harvest. Sow chickpeas in the garden about the date of the average last frost in spring or slightly earlier.
