The Mountainash, American, Sorbus americana, is a smooth-barked tree that can reach a height of 30 feet with a trunk 18 inches in diameter. The crown is narrow, open and round-topped. Its dark green leaves resemble those of the sumac and turn orange and purple in the fall. This tree provides spring and summer interest, with white flower clusters in the spring, and then these blooms yield brightly colored clusters of red berries in the summertime. Mountainash prefers acidic soil with good drainage and full sun to light shade.
