Honeysuckle Gold Flame

Gloriously Fragrant for 4 Months or More! Butterflies and hummingbirds love the blooms, and songbirds feast on the autumn berries! The sweet smell of Honeysuckle defines the summer garden for many of us, and Gold Flame is the most richly scented of all. These lovely rose-and-cream blooms open by the many thousand from early summer through early fall, perfuming everything around them. Appearing on a vigorous, easy-to-grow plant that can be pruned into a tidy shrub or left alone as a long twining vine, the blooms lure butterflies and hummingbirds in droves, then give way to red berries that songbirds find irresistible in autumn! There is no more productive, beautiful, or fragrant way to enhance the sunny garden than with Gold Flame.The plant begins spring with masses of 2-inch blue-green leaves appearing on reddish stems. As soon as the warm summer weather arrives, so do the flowers -- 2 inches long, tubular (just made for a hummingbird's beak!), and rosy-pink on the outside, creamy yellow within. Cut back the plant after the first flush of blooms and the later flowers will be much more profuse, continuing easily into autumn. If you are growing Gold Flame as a twining vine, let it climb a trellis, arbor, or sturdy open-habit tree, where it will reach 10 to 15 feet long and about 3 to 6 feet wide. If you are pruning it into a shrub, cut it back several times in spring to increase its bushiness and restrain the growth. It will form a dense, neatly rounded shrub of any height you desire and about 6 feet in width. Just give this plant well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine (afternoon shade only in the very hottest climates), plus breathing room (it does not like to be crowded), and you will be repaid in fragrance, color, winged visitors, and multi-season beauty. Semi-evergreen in warm climates. Zones 5-9.
