Nick and Christy Harp of Jackson Township are the proud parents of a 1725 pound pumpkin. Christy Harp a the true grower is teacher from Ohio who won top honors in a pumpkin-growing contest with a world record 1725-pound pumpkin behemoth.
The big moment took place on Saturday at the Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers weight-off in Green Township.
"I kind of knew I had a good shot at the world record, but when it hit the scale, it was just happy, I was crying, thought I was gonna pass out," Christy explains.
For Christy, growing gargantuan gourds has become a personal challenge since the eighth grade, and is now a bit of a hobby at the family farm. This year, she and her husband decided to have a little contest.
So what's her secret?
"We filled up the soil with lots of compost, coffee grounds, cow manure, and then we pick out seeds with good genetics."
"Hey, even if I get beat I was the world record holder for at least a week."
Contest organizers say the entry topped the 1,689-pound record-holder grown in 2007 by Joe Jutras of North Scituate, R.I.
The seeds from Harp's winning pumpkin will be dried and given to anyone who asks.
